Living in the Fly Away Zone - Release Date: August 5th
Several months ago, I wrote several essays about faith, aging, and the things in life that matter the most. One reader reminded me of a verse from Psalm 90:10. It speaks about our years of life on earth—seventy, but perhaps in some instances, eighty—before we, as the King James Version has it, “fly away”.
The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. —Psalm 90:10
I was intrigued by that phrase: fly away. I entered into that age-bracket only a year ago. It has been described as the “Fourth Quarter” or even worse, a “Two Minute Warning!” But I loved the hope and promise of the psalm.
So I wrote some more chapters and put them in a book which will be published on August 5th called “Living in the Fly Away Zone: Life, Aging, Faith and the Things that Matter Most”

The book is written for all believers, but particularly those thinking about their mortality or who have friends and family members who are. There are forty chapters arranged in four different segments. Each chapter has a series of thought-prompts or reflection questions.

Dear Readers,
Writing for me is always a clarifying exercise. Michael Hyatt once said that our thoughts disentangle themselves as they pass over the lips and through pencil tips. He meant that we really don’t know what we think until we explain our thoughts or write about them.
That has been my intention in all my writing, not just my books, but nearly every essay I have composed for Substack on The Anglican.
When I wrote the Introduction and entitled it “Some thoughts about Women’s Ordination”, and published it, several friends wrote or texted me with a wry statement: “Good luck with that!” “You’re brave.”
One even quoted Alexander Pope’s great line, texting me, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.”
But actually, the conversation has been thoughtful, gracious, and charitable in every way. Some have disagreed. Some questioned my motives or asked why I had come to this understanding. But very few—surprisingly few—unsubscribed or pushed away from me.
