Twelve Takes on the Trinity
Quotes, Notes, Portraits, and Poems Unveiling the Beauty and Wonder of the Most Glorious Mystery in the Universe
As we approach Trinity Sunday, let’s remember what others have said about the Trinity in past times, places, and periods of history. Read on.
1. J. C. Ryle
“It was the whole Trinity, which at the beginning of creation said, ‘Let us make man.’ It was the whole Trinity again, which at the beginning of the Gospel seemed to say, ‘Let us save man.’”
Why it matters: Redemption isn’t the side project of one Person of the Godhead. From creation to the cross, the Trinity moves in harmony—Father, Son, and Spirit acting together in love. The Gospel is thoroughly Trinitarian.
2. The Apostle Paul
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” – 2 Corinthians 13:14
Why it matters: This benediction is a blessing shaped by the Trinity. Grace, love, and fellowship are the footprints of God’s presence in the church. It is a very useful way we can end all or our prayers, say good-night in the evening, and greet a new day.
3. Miroslav Volf
“Because the Christian God is not a lonely God, but rather a communion of three persons… one and the same act of faith places a person into a new relationship both with God and with all others who stand in communion with God.”
Why it matters: Faith in the Triune God isn’t private. It draws us into a community. To believe in the Trinity is to be swept into a shared life—a church, a family, a communion.
